- The Question of Dietary Supplementation -
Do we really need to take supplements?

Experts have widely differing opinions regarding our need, or lack thereof, for dietary supplementation. After study, I have come to believe that taking supplements is a good thing to do. But there's much more to the question.

Experts also debate the issue of soil depletion. They say even foods given loving attention and care during the growing process, organic foods, can be vitamin and mineral deficient because of nutrient deficient soils. They say it is, therefore, important that we undertake a long-term nutritional supplement program to enhance our diets and to make sure that we fulfill our minimum daily nutritional requirements.

I'm inclined to listen to a prominent doctor in whom I really believe. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, M.D., in his book Eat to Live, speaks of soil depletion in this way: "Thankfully, by eating a diet with a wide variety of natural plant foods, from a variety of soils, the threat of nutritional deficiency merely as a result of soil inadequacy is eliminated. Americans are not nutrient-deficient because of our depleted soil, as some nutritional-supplement proponents claim. Americans are nutrient-deficient because they do not eat a sufficient quantity of fresh produce."

So the point is simply about whether or not you are eating a nutrient-deficient diet. If your diet is lacking, or if you feel you need extra supplementation, a supplement list follows. The list is not intended as any recommendation. It is simply the list of supplements which I have investigated and used from time to time. I consider some of these supplements to be essential to my diet. You'll have to study and find out which are essential for you.

Statements about product notes and descriptions have not been evaluated by the FDA, and products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Please see the 'Website Terms, Conditions, & Disclaimers' section of the Site Info. / Contact page.

For those of you who say: "This is too complicated, you've got to make it simpler." "There are too many pills to take." And above all else, for those you you who say: "There's no way I'm going to spend that kind of money on this stuff," here is my answer...  If you don't take the issue of nutrient deficiency seriously you will eventually come to live with the consequences - a myriad of serious, even life threatening, illnesses. Tomorrow's health begins with today's decisions. Make the commitment to having a healthy future. Do what it takes to get the job done right.

Please understand that supplements are not magic pills. You don't pop a pill in your mouth and correct years of bad health and bad nutritional decisions, coupled with a genetic predisposition for various problems. Supplements work - over time - to correct deficiencies, balance inequities, and enable your body's organs and systems to recover to do their jobs. Commit to diet supplementation as a long-term project. Give the supplements time to work. Manage your health.

Choosing the supplements in this list has come after months of studying countless references on nutrition. Each product, and each product manufacturer, was carefully chosen. If you think to yourself that this is an extraordinary number of supplements to take daily, just ask yourself, "Do you want a healthy body or not?" "Are you committed to getting the final results or not?"

Physically managing this quantity of supplements can be daunting and discouraging. Instead of opening thirty supplement containers every day, I have set up a system of little amber glass jars labeled for each time period. When breakfast rolls around I just reach for my "B" (breakfast) supplements. I refill the jars every two weeks. [There are exceptions to this plan. For example, probiotics are kept in the fridge until use.]

Most listed products are available from a distributor called N.E.E.D.S. (Nutritional Ecological Environmental Delivery System)  800-634-1380  www.needs.com. I prefer to order from N.E.E.D.S. because they are a central distributing house for hundreds of different manufacturers.

Although you can order most products via their website (and each item below is linked directly to the respective item webpage), there are some products which are not available via the web. For those products, you must place your order via telephone. Call in your orders Monday through Friday 8am - 7pm eastern and Saturday 9am - 5:30pm eastern. Incidently, I have found the phone operators to be extremely knowledgable about their products, and the company also has "wellness counselors" available for you to speak to.

When placing your first order, ask them to send you their free catalog. In my supplement list which follows, the N.E.E.D.S. item number is shown with each item. For example: NPR-5108-060. Any product not available from N.E.E.D.S. will be listed as "ORDER DIRECT," with accompanying ordering information. Go to www.needs.com for complete product descriptions, or simply click on the individual item links below.

Notes:

1.  Note to vegans: Some of the listed supplements contain gelatin in the outer capsule. I am currently investigating alternative products. Until then, you can find substitutes at N.E.E.D.S.

2.  You are solely responsible for establishing which supplements, if any, produce an allergic reaction in your body.

3.  Many listed products have some of the same ingredients. Caution was taken to make sure their was no toxicity caused by the cumulative amount of each ingredient. That is, each product was listed in a spread sheet showing all ingredients. Each ingredient was then evaluated for it's total load, the cumulative value if one would be taking all the supplements. It is in this way that the resultant list was formed.

4.  WARNING: Remember - as a general guideline, keep supplements out of reach of children.

Multivitamin and Mineral
Nothing even comes close

All people, even those following a high nutrient diet-style, should take a high-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement to assure optimal amounts of disease-protective nutrients that may be sub-obtimal even in a good diet. Nothing on the market compares with Dr. Fuhrman’s Gentle Care as they all either contain potentially harmful ingredients such as folic acid or have too little of something valuable. Dr. Fuhrman’s Gentle Care Formula multivitamin and mineral supplement has always been formulated to contain the optimal amounts of each nutrient and to exclude potentially harmful ingredients. Dr. Fuhrman thoroughly reviews the medical literature before allowing ingredients to be included in his Gentle Care Formula.

Dr. Fuhrman’s new formulation includes several improvements:

Naturally derived ingredients. Certain nutrients, particularly vitamin K, have been shown to have increased bioavailability when derived naturally from food sources compared to those produced synthetically. For example, Gentle Care Formula includes Vitamin K2 that is naturally derived from natto (fermented soybeans) and iodine from kelp.

Whole food extracts.
Whole foods supply much more than vitamins and minerals – their vitamins and minerals come packaged with additional phytochemicals that have additional health benefits and may also impact absorption or actions of vitamins and minerals in the body. Whole food extracts are included in Gentle Care Formula in order to simulate a more natural environment for nutrient absorption, and also to maximize the phytochemical and antioxidant benefits of the supplement. Gentle Care Formula includes these whole food derived super foods: bilberry, acai, spirulina, watercress, goji berry, acerola berry and others not just to provide vitamin C but also hundreds of other beneficial nutrients. Additionally, it contains the powerful antioxidant resveratrol (widely known for its presence in red wine) from polygonum cuspidatum root extract

Amino acid chelated minerals.
Amino acid chelation has been shown to increase the bioavailability of minerals in supplements.3 When the amino acid binds to the mineral, the two form a chemical structure that may have greater absorption capacity than the mineral in other forms.

Additional Vitamin D.
To maintain sufficient blood levels of vitamin D, individual supplement requirements vary, with many people requiring more than 2000 IU per day. Including 1000 IU vitamin D in Gentle Care Formula allows those with greater vitamin D requirements to take fewer Osteo-Sun capsules in order to achieve optimal vitamin D levels.

Veggie capsules can be opened.
Tablets have been replaced with capsules, so that those choosing not to swallow pills can safely twist open and add the contents of the capsules to food or drink. Switching to capsules also eliminates the need for fillers and stabilizers.

Selenium removed.
There is some evidence that high selenium levels may contribute to diabetes, hyperlipidemia, prostate cancer, and cardiovascular disease, and impaired immune and thyroid function.4 Therefore, supplementation beyond what is present in natural foods is likely not beneficial, and may result in overexposure.5

As always, Dr. Fuhrman’s supplements are manufactured by a GMP certified and FDA regulated facility – assuring quality every step of the way.

The main problem with taking a typical multivitamin is that it may expose you to supplemental ingredients that may actually cause harm with nutrients that you do not need. Excessive quantities of some vitamins and minerals can be toxic or have long term negative health effects. Some forms are more absorbable and useful to our bodies than others. Selecting a multivitamin can be very confusing because new and sometimes conflicting research appears almost every day. Science moves much faster than most companies can keep pace with, but Dr. Fuhrman strives to keep his products as current as possible, amd most importantly his exhaustive research assures you do not take risks with your health. While most people can certainly benefit from a multivitamin, most multi’s may cause more harm than good.

Compare Dr. Fuhrman’s Gentle Care Formula to other popular multivitamin and mineral supplements:

** Beware of false advertising.

If it doesn’t say “Vegan” it isn’t. Although these multis are positioned as “vegan-friendly” or “completely vegetarian”, they are not vegan. These claims are often made even though the source of Vitamin D in these vitamins is actually D3, which is derived from lanolin (the oil from sheep’s skin), which is then mixed with “raw bacteria”.

Dr. Fuhrman’s multivitamins are free of potentially harmful and toxic ingredients:
Certain nutrients, in isolated supplement form, are potentially harmful. Despite these dangers, most multivitamins still include these ingredients.

Vitamin A. Vitamin A supplementation is associated with osteoporosis and increased mortality rate.6,7

Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene supplementation may impair absorption of other beneficial carotenoids and is associated with increased mortality rate.7,8

Vitamin E. Vitamin E supplements are also associated with increased mortality rate.7,8

Folic acid. Folic acid in supplement form is different from the folate found in green vegetables, and is associated with increased incidence of breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers.9 However, folate from food sources is associated with decreased cancer risk.10

Copper. Copper in excess contributes to oxidative stress and is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.11

Iron. Although iron is crucial for oxygen transport and other physiological processes, in excess iron is an oxidant that may contribute to cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline in older adults.11 Iron should only be taken as a supplement when an enhanced need exists, such as with menstruating women or in pregnancy.

Remember - taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement, even this carefully designed one, is obviously not a substitute for healthful eating and can't supply ideal levels of all micronutrients or make up for the harmful substances taken in when consuming processed foods.

Vitamin Mineral Blend

Dr. Fuhrman's Osteo-Sun is a Vitamin D, Calcium, & Magnesium Blend for Strong Bones, Hair and Nails

Vitamin D is more effective than calcium for protecting and building bone, plus it powerfully protects against cancer. Too much calcium can actually interfere with the conversion of vitamin D into its biologically active form, but some extra calcium taken with the Vitamin D has been shown in studies to aid bone health. The main issue is that most people still take too much calcium and do not have adequate levels of vitamin D in their tissues and this places them at a dramatic increased risk of osteoporosis and other diseases. A multivitamin containing the RDA for D is simply not sufficient to bring blood levels up to the ideal range, especially as we age.

Dr. Fuhrman's recommended dosage varies based on individual need, but Osteo-Sun is designed so most people will be in the ideal range from the intake of 3 per day, in addition to one's multivitamin. Some may require more and some may not need as much as 3, however, the amount that is right for you can best be determined by a blood test screening for vitamin D 25 - hydroxy.

Most people, (over 80 percent) taking a typical multivitamin that contains 400 IUs of vitamin D are still deficient when tested.

Dr. Fuhrman recommends that people take 2 of his Gentle Care Formula (with 800 IUs of vitamin D) plus 3 of theOsteo-Sun. Then at some point, just to make sure the standard recommendation is right for you, have your vitamin D levels checked with a blood test. Then the supplement dose can be adjusted up or down depending on the results. Take one extra if your level is below 35 and take one less if your level is above 50.

The dose of Osteo-Sun is designed to have most people fall in this ideal range, not too much and not too little. For those getting more daily sun exposure, generally, taking only 2 daily is adequate.

Dr. Fuhrman's Osteo-Sun gives you the extra vitamin D you need and just the right levels of calcium and magnesium to maximize bone health. Plus, it has silica for stronger bones, hair and nails!

Choose the formula that best suits you, go to www.DrFuhrman.com

Osteo-Sun contains vitamin D3* (cholecalciferol), the most potent and efficient form of vitamin D.

Osteo-Sun Vegan utilizes vitamin D2(ergocalciferol), a form of the vitamin which is obtained only from plant sources. Higher levels of vitamin D2 are used in this product to adjust for its lower hormonal activity. Even though it may have a shorter half life, in daily use, this higher dose, taken regularly, is just as effective.

Osteo-Sun combined with Gentle Care, his multivitamin, gives you the amount of vitamin D that most people require to reach an optimal blood level.

* Vitamin D, sourced from vitamin D3 or Cholecalciferol, is derived from sheep wool.

Additional Vitamins

Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) is the metabolically active coenzyme of Vitamin B6. The body must convert B6 vitamins to pyridoxal, and then phosphorylate them to P5P in the liver. This conversion is necessary, since P5P is the only form which can be used by the enzymes involved in biochemical processes, which are associated with nitrogen and protein metabolism and heme synthesis. P5P is exported from the liver and is considered the most relevant direct measure of vitamin B6 status. Vitamin B6 nutritional status can have a significant and selective modulatory impact on central production of both serotonin and GABA neurotransmitters, which can positively affect emotional response, pain perception, and anxiety. Vitamin B6 has also been studied for cardiovascular uses as well.
