What Makes Us Tick?
What Historical Patterns Affect Our Thinking Today?

"As more of us examine the cultural prejudices of our society - and the prejudices of our species - we begin to unravel the traditions, institutions, and actions of the master mentality. It is at times a painful path, as we discover in ourselves some of the beliefs and feelings that we had, in different circumstances, perhaps disdained in others. But, ultimately, it is a path promising hope and the possibility for a future of peace - something we have almost stopped hoping for. With every new perspective gained, doors open to the world that afford us greater depth of experience and existence. The realization that the animals we enslave, the animals we treat as things, the animals who slave for us, are alive, are as possessive of their lives as you or I, this realization drastically changes one's perspective. Hopefully, it will also change our actions. And we may, in discovering the others with whom we share this earth, discover even more of ourselves."

What Does an Animal Mean to You, and How Does That Meaning Affect Our World?

In her groundbreaking new book, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows
Melanie Joy explores the invisible system that shapes our perception of the meat
we eat, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why.
She calls this system carnism. Carnism is the belief system, or ideology, that allows
us to selectively choose which animals become our meat, and it is sustained by
complex psychological and social mechanisms.

Like other “isms” (racism, sexism, etc.), carnism is most harmful when it is unrecognized and unacknowledged. Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cowsnames and explains this phenomenon
and offers it up for examination. Unlike the many books that explain why we shouldn’t eat meat, Joy’s book explains why we do eat meat—and thus how we can make more informed choices as citizens and consumers.

'Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows' may very well be one of the most important books I have ever read. I believe that our dietary choices have ramifications which affect everything and everyone else in our world... and maybe beyond.

We stand on the threshold of a new future. Melanie Joy's book literally defines and establishes that future's antithetical cornerstone. By that I mean, that by looking at the future that we don't want, we gain a clear understanding about the future that we do want.

Thanks to Ms. Joy, we now have a concrete word, in language, which describes perfectly what we don't want. 'Carnism' has long been a human norm based on exploitation, theft, cruelty, usurpation, violence, and killing. Those words have no place in our new future.

As this book has us scrutinize our beliefs, it underscores the cost for blindly following those beliefs; poor health, a sickening environment and an unconscious, unethical way of interacting with non-humans. In short, our choices/actions have been incongruent with our inherent values, and we are suffering the consequences.

In exploding the myths associated with carnism, Melanie Joy inspires us to make new choices leading to a new future. The keywords of this new future are compassion, caring, understanding and empathy. Ms. Joy writes, "... I believe that, as humans, we have a fundamental desire to strive to become our best selves." It is this ideal of 'best selves' that should have us each thoroughly questioning who we are, and it is this ideal of 'best selves' that deserves our unfailing attention.

I highly recommend this book.  -Doug Hines

Everyone Concerned About The Direction
And Well Being Of Our Global Society
Should Read This Book:

This book is about "the connection between the core ritual of our herding culture - eating
animals - and our destructive values and institutions. Whether we're of the right, left, or in
between, we all agree to ignore this basic causal root of our problems." - Will Tuttle, Ph.D.
