Captain Doug Hines
is a former U.S. Coast
Guard licensed 100-ton
Motor Yacht Captain.

This is one of the boats I skippered. It was used in the Burt Reynolds movie "Stick."

Some of you offshore boaters may remember the Atlantic coast pilot guide I wrote back in 1992. It is entitled The Captain's Coastal Directions: Port to Port Course Plans for Ocean Going Vessels. I hope the book served you well. It is still around - through Amazon, Borders, and various other places. It's also on e-bay. Google it.

So... What's it like to be a motor yacht Captain?

Although the following story isn't about me personally, it clearly explains the frustrations of being a motor yacht Captain.

Here's an excerpt from 'What Yacht Captains Really Think of Owners' by Chris Davis in Motorboat & Sailing Nov 1987

The scene is a 130-foot luxury motor yacht moored quietly at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Marina. Time: 2:00 am. The crew has been asleep for hours: The boat's owner, however, is keeping the bar open for a few die-hard guests.

Suddenly, the owner decides he wants to go for a ride. He wakes the Captain, who in turn dutifully awakens the crew, and within half an hour they have cast off and are underway.

The owner wants to head north up the intracoastal waterway. The Captain explains that boats this size can only go one way - south to the basin then straight out to sea. So they head south, but when they reach the basin, the owner decides it's a perfect time for a helicopter ride. The chopper pilot is awakened: He comes to the bridge, but refuses to go up with the owner. He tells his boss: 'You've had too much to drink,' an observation that costs the pilot his job on the spot.

The owner then orders the boat south along the waterway. The Captain protests: 'We draw nine feet. Look at the charts.' The owner says: 'THEN I'LL DRIVE,' which he does. But a few hundred yards or so down the narrowing channel, the owner decides to turn the yacht around. There is not enough room. The boat hits a marker, delivering $15,000 worth of damage to the hull's paint: then backs into the rocks, chewing up the propellers. The owner has one last drink and passes out at the helm.

The next day he wakes up, inspects the damage and fires the entire crew.

A true story (and typical).

Now you know why I'm no longer a yacht Captain. I:)

Just a little personal info:

Aside from my immediate family and friends, there have been four significant people who have had a major influence on my life.

• The first is Werner Erhard, founder of The EST Training years ago. I had the privilege of serving for a short time on Werner's personal staff, and I came to realize that each of us can make a difference in shaping societal transformation.

• The second person who has impacted my very foundation is Randall Fitzgerald, author of The Hundred-Year Lie - How Food and Medicine Are Destroying Your Health. That book opened my eyes as to how corporate greed dominates our society and how our bodies have become toxic waste dumps. Randall's book inspired me to begin formal nutritional studies.

• The third person who has made a difference to who I am today is John Robbins, whom I quote on my home page. John is author of Diet For A New AmericaHealthy At 100, and The Food Revolution - How Your Diet Can Help to Save Your Life and Our World. In John's books I found a new way of living my life.

• The fourth, and most recent, major influence on my life has been Dr. Aris La Tham. His work elevates simple eating to a transformational, life-changing act.

What's All This Vita-Mix Action On My Website?

I guess it's obvious that I really like to recommend my Vita-Mix blender. I really believe in the product, and I really believe the product supports a raw food diet. In fact, I believe a Vita-Mix is an absolutely essential kitchen tool in any modern kitchen. I use my Vita-Mix daily for fruit and veggie smoothies, and I even use it occasionally to grind flax seeds to make flax crackers!!!

Better than juicers, which separate the juice from the roughage, the Vita-mix blends the whole food into a great, nourishing smoothie. Fruit and Green-Leaf Vegetable Smoothies just can't be beat for freshness, and whole food nutrition!

NOTE:
I have little formal nutritional training. I took some nutrition courses at the college level, but I had to leave school because I was in a financial crisis. I do, however, have hundreds and hundreds of hours in which I read countless nutritional books and university level studies. I would like to think that I know a little something about the subject. In the end, however, everything in this website is opinion and conjecture based upon my private studies.

I have to tell you that I'm pretty satisfied with how my website has turned out. You see... I had to create it all myself. I don't have the finances to pay a webmaster or a web designer, so I had to do all the work myself.

I chose all the photographic images (I looked at over 80,000 images.). I did all the image editing, i.e. resizing, cropping, adding borders, adding text, etc. It took over thirty major steps just to produce the 'Eat Raw Organic Sunshine' header at the top of the page. I even had to add the Sunshine myself!

Then there is all the background study that went into the site information. That has taken me over two years to accomplish. All throughout that time I was in the process of writing the text, and rewriting the text, and rewriting the text.

To build the site as you see it today, excluding the study/writing time, has taken just over five months.

I did have some support along the way... The site is based on a template provided by GoDaddy.com / Website Tonight. All throughout the site creation process I was in regular contact with GoDaddy's outstanding technical service people. I had questions galore. I always knew that I could call or e-mail GoDaddy at anytime - day or night, and I always knew that I would always reach a smart, articulate company representative on the other end of the phone line or e-mail. That kind of service is difficult to match today.

So, if there are a lot of "I"s in this paragraph it's because my ego is showing. I'm pretty proud of the site so far, even if it might look amateurish to the pros. The real point is... I hope you like it too!

I had to laugh when I realized that the acronym for my website, Eat Raw Organic Sunshine, is EROS. Of course EROS, in Greek mythology, is the God of Love, the son of Aphrodite. The word literally means 'sexual love or desire.' That works for me!

From Me to You
- some things I've learned along the way -

"Eating should be a conscious, transformational process
whereby we use the energy of living food as the
foundation for the results which we produce in life."

• • •

"Eating requires responsibility on our part. We need to be
responsible for choosing quality, life-enhancing foods, and
we need to be responsible to the food, that it's energy may be transformed into some positive, life enhancing result.

• • •

"We've developed a mass-market food production/distribution system that is more dedicated to shelf life than to human life."

• • •

"One day we will all come to recognize that plant-based
nutrition is not only the foundation of a healthy existence,
it is the cornerstone of all of our future achievements."

• • •

"To those of you who think that genetic predisposition is
the ruling factor in your current health, here is an excellent
quote from a preeminent, esteemed medical doctor.
Caldwell Esselstyn, M.D. says,
'Genes load the gun. Lifestyle pulls the trigger.'

Instead of living your lives worrying that your dreaded
'inherited gene-past' is going to rear its ugly head and
bite you, rather live your lives contributing to your
health and well-being through diet and exercise.
Do that, and chances are better than not,
that the trigger will never get pulled."

My Amateurish Scribbles - by Doug Hines

Each Word Matters

Each spoken word causes something, some shift, some result.

The silence between the words is the distinction which allows the words to be.

Word, no word, word.

Silence matters too.

All of the words and all of the silence ever before now contribute to who you are, and

All that you speak creates, impacts, and matters for all the generations to come.

On How to Be

We're here as we are because all before happened as it happened.

Our very existence may not have come had one shoe string not parted when it did.

Start from where you are today and consciously build your tomorrows.

On Affecting the Future

Function on the thin possibility that you can, in fact, affect societal cultural norms.

Dedication is working to achieve your goals in the face of knowing that your work will most probably be in vain.

A Little Advice

There are no small moments.
Each moment is significant.
Pack your life full of life.

How to Win Customers and Keep Them for Life
by Michael LeBoeuf, Ph.D.

Focusing on long-term goals will keep you from becoming sidetracked by short-term frustrations.

• A young man's lifelong dream was to attend West Point. He was twice turned down, but applied a third time and was accepted. His name was Douglas MacArthur.

• Both Hewlett-Packard and Atari turned down the opportunity to buy the first Apple microcomputer. First-year sales of the Apple were $2.5 million.

• Henry Ford went bankrupt in his first year in the automobile business and two years later his second company failed. His third one has done rather well.

• Twenty-three publishers rejected a children's book written by an author who called himself Dr. Seuss. The twenty-fourth publisher published it and the book sold six million copies.

• In 1903 King Gillette invented the safety razor and sold a grand total of 51 razors and 168 blades for the entire year.

• A dry-goods merchant went broke with his first three stores before the fourth one caught on. His name was R. H. Macy.
